About Lana …

Lana, on being a student in RTJSIS: “I like trying new things with Ashley. We are doing the Duke of Edinburgh program together and it’s helping me grow up and learn how to be responsible. We are taking Cree lessons together and it’s taught be how to be patient, because learning a language take time. It’s keeping me in touch with my ancestry and makes me feel more connected to my background…’cause I’m Cree! The Duke of Edinburgh and RTJSIS program makes me try my best and to not give up!  I especially love when Ashley takes me to Made by Marcus for Ice Cream, it’s the best!”

“Becoming a mentor with the TJSIS program has added tremendous joy to my life. Spending time with Lana has become the best part of my week. She teaches me so about what it’s like being a teenager in the world today. At 13 years of age, Lana knows more about life than I did at 20. Her positive, joyful presence is contagious, and her willingness to try new things and meet new people is truly impressive. She continues to think about ways in which she can help her people and set an example for her siblings and community. We started taking Cree language classes together, because she wanted to surprise her family, and it has taught me so much about the history of the Cree people and the beauty and knowledge that is hidden in its language, in its people.” “I feel honoured to be a friend and supporter of Lana and the RTJSIS program.” – Ashley
